CQ RR

I'm in a CQ round robin on Stitchin Fingers, and received the first block from one of my RR partners, Kim. Here's what her block looked like upon arrival.
The picture is of her Mother, and the beaded lace piece and the pleated flounce came  from Kim's wedding veil. Isn't it beautiful?
Three yo-yo flowers echoing the colors of the block were created by Kim and connected with stem stitch branches.

Examining the block, I decided to follow Kim's lead and add more beads, lace, and flowers, repeating the block colors of cream, blue, and brown. I wanted the focal point to be the picture of Kim's Mom, and I hoped to keep the feeling delicate, feminine, and pretty.

Thinking that the lace and flounce competed with the photo, a necklace of  blue swarovski crystals were added to highlight the face and draw more attention to Kim's Mom.

Then, to gently frame the face and bring out the warm skin tones, an S-swirl of pink lace flowers was added.

Lace in a soft brown was added to the top right seam edge with a pretty, cream beaded gimp lace.  The brown lace was gathered into a frill to adorn the block edge, and topped with a second piece of lace in brown leaves and blue flowers. To the left of the face, I added a lace border in a flowing, soft blue, repeating the blues and carrying the eye to the lace, the face, and the crystals.

I left the other seams around the photo unembellished, as I didn't want to close in too much on the lovely face. Leaving these seams bare brought more light into the photo, I thought.

The flower-topped lace frill draws the eye along the side seam instead of allowing a straight diagonal seam to carry the viewer out of the block.

Greenery connects the pink flowers together, and tatted leaves were added, with some pointing towards the face in the photo. Some flower petals were not sewn down onto the fabric to give the illusion of flowers moving on a breeze.

On the top left diagonal seam edge, I added the same lace that anchors the soft brown lace frill on the right, repeating the lace pattern, as well as the block colors. French knot centers attach the lace.
A row of tatted Josephine Knot flowers in a  soft
blue perle, anchored  with seed beads dance along the seam on the far right.
Tendrils of greenery climb around the flower stem Kim created, and woven picot leaves were added.

On the small right diagonal seam, a Josephine Knot flower cascade was added in blue, and I repeated the seed bead center in each flower. This color repeats the button shade of the yo-yo flower below, and the fabric in the yo-yo flower opposite.

I returned to the upper right seam to add more embellishments. The white gimp and beaded lace was too stark against the dark brown background, so I added some caramel thread and metallic braid in copper along the top lace edge. Caramel JK flower cascades sit atop the soft brown lace and  seed beads in a tawny brown were added to each center.
To soften the straight edge of the beaded gimp lace, and to repeat the light tones of the lower beaded lace and fabric flounce, thread branches were added in the cream thread, along with beads in the cream and tawny-brown, and french knots in caramel, cream, pink and blue.
I think this adds a whimsical touch.

I added blue seed beads in two shades, in the center opening of the blue lace seam trim to the left of the picture to add a variation in the blue. The pink flowers were given cream bead and french knot centers, adding another tone of soft pink.

My contribution to this block is now complete, and it will now travel to Brinda in India for the next step of its journey.

I hope you like what I've added to your block, Kim!  It was a lot of fun stitching!

Hope you have some fun stitching today, too.
Thanks for visiting.

White Piece Progress

I've been slowly working on my White Piece. Here are a few photos showing my progress:
 This  (oops it's upside down!)

became this: my first attempt at SRE!!  I like it. I used a silk ribbon - 'Hydrangea' is the colour with soft tones of blue, pink and mauve.

more fancy picot tatting with some seed beads
and with beads added to the picots on this white flower
some  'pearl' beads
a shell heart
another shot of the beaded fancy picot flower
white mini heart beads and little 'pearls'

embroidered hearts

'Pearls' added to the lace with a crystal centre.
There's still a little bit more to finish.
I hope you've been having fun tatting, or CQing, too!

Thanks for visiting.

A Package in the Post

I found a package in the mailbox. It was from NickiLee!  Oh, boy!  My Christmas CQ block!

Once I was home, I gently opened the package.

An envelope with a pretty card.

I began to unwrap the tissue paper.

Ooooh, a peek!
I see red velvet and beads and beautiful fabrics, lace.....

I uncovered more tissue paper.....oooh, so lush. Rich fabrics, beautifully embellished. I picked up my square to open it fully......

What......?

Hey!  Wait a minute! This isn't a CQ square!

I flipped it over.

Hmmm. It's so pretty. Look at that button clasp   ...and the wreath!

I opened the clasp.

It's a sewing kit! With treasures inside! Blue beads, gold metallic thread, and 7 beautiful, porcelain (?) beads with delicate flowers......... and a beaded brooch. Wonderful!

These beads are lovely!

The whole outside of the sewing kit. Isn't it gorgeous? I love it! Trimmed in red velvet, it's soft to the touch. I didn't have a sewing kit, so this is just perfect!
What a great idea, NickiLee! Thank you so much!

Thanks for visiting.

A Christmas CQ Swap

NickiLee and I had a summer 1:1 cq swap last year, and had so much fun, we decided to do a Christmas one. This time we made the squares for one another, and then embellished them.
I told Nickilee I was going to use the stash of Christmas fabrics I've been gathering and saving over several years, for when I had time to make an embellished table runner. There were traditional fabrics, such as holly,
red berries, red, white and green stripes, and some not-so-traditional designs, such as black cotton with gold gift boxes. I laid them out, mixed them up, changed them around, and came up with several nice possibilities. But for some reason, I just couldn't make a start.

Hmmm. Then I realized why I was blocked.

Anyone who knows NickiLee even just a wee bit, knows that she loves the colour blue. Aha!
I rummaged through all my fabric stash, and came up with blue fabrics I hoped she'd like. I had so much fun doing her Christmas square in blues, white and silver.
This is the square I sent to Nickilee:

It's certainly blue! I flirted with the thought of a "Blue Christmas' theme, then with a theme of Angels singing 'Glory Glory', but in the end decided to keep it simpler.

Most of the seam treatments are done with beads and either lace or ribbon.

There are fire-polished crystals added to this strip of pale blue lace.
ribbons, decorative thread, and beads..... and bead hearts on a strip of navy beadweaving.

the fabric gift boxes are outlined and tied with metallic and decorative threads, On the right side you can see a bit of one of the tatted garlands I made to drape on the tree. They proved to be too heavy looking for the lace and ribbon-yarn I used, so I placed them  as borders and decorative strips, instead.

White 'cats-eye' beads adorn the pale blue lace with strips of white and silver beads. There are blue star beads, and a ribbon of tatted, metallic garland .

I'm so happy that NickiLee likes her blue Christmas square!

I am eagerly waiting to discover just what wonderful creation NickiLee has made me! I'm off to check the mail box!

Gee, what shall we do for 2011?

Hope there are wonderful discoveries in your mail box!

Just a Little Peek

I have been working on a 1:1 crazy quilt square with a special theme. I can't show you the whole square because:
a) I'm not yet finished
b) I don't know if my CQ partner reads my blog and I don't want to spoil the surprise if she does happen to check it out
So, I decided to tease you with a little sneak peek. And, yes, there is tatting!

Several threads have been used : perle cotton size 5 medium turquoise, Caron Wildflowers, two similar colourways, one of which is Blue Lagoon,  metallic thread in dark turquoise.
I am pleased with how it has turned out so far.
There is a little bit of symbolism in my embellishments, as well as the use of some of my hand-carved stamps to create some patterns.

I shall post photos once it has been completed, and received. Sorry to be such a tease.
