Tatted Zipper Flower

I learned about zipper flowers from Cathy, and I wondered how one might look if I added some tatting
I started with some pink perle size 8, but, then I thought that the pink might not show up as well as I'd like against the pink zipper. Lady Shuttlemaker's Rio was perfect.
The colors show well against the pink
I tatted more fancy picot  chain, then gathered the zipper fabric, and sewed it into a flower.
Here's the result. I added a topping of 3 JK flowers with seed bead centers.

What do you think?

My conclusions:
- this flower is quite pouffy and  the long picots hide the zipper
-  it might work out better if I used a shorter zipper for this type of flower
- I could use shorter picots, perhaps, so the zipper would be more visible
- tatting on the zipper flower top might be all that's necessary
- a zipper with the metal teeth might show up better against the tatting

I started a second flower type with a shorter fancy picot, but no results so far.

It's started. The colors are changing in this potted plant. Cooler nights are here, with cooler days to follow. Autumn is on the way.

Hope you have fun today creating.
Happy September! I hope those of you who've been sweltering in the heat and drought will soon find relief in cooler temperatures, and, hopefully, some rain.

Thanks for visiting.
Hugs from Suz

  1. Dang! I closed before I verified!

I think this is so clever! I agree that metal teeth might provide more of a contrast. Great idea!

  2. Suz, I believe you are onto something here! It looks lovely, and I cannot wait to see your results with a shorter picot. What a clever girl you are! I once learned how to needle tat, and about all I remember (or think I remember) is doing picots. So, I may be using your idea to embellish some of my zipper roses. You go, girl! Hugs, Cathy

  3. Who knew zippers could be so pretty?

Your last photo of the potted plant with leaves that have just begun to change colors is a perfect colorway inspiration! You should send it to Krystaldawne to see if Dr. Von Threadmore would want to use it. He is always looking for new color inspiration.

Oh, LOL! My word verification is "bribe!"

  5. Thanks Gina! I wish I could take credit, but I borrowed the zipper flower idea. I just added the tatting. I think about adding tatting to just about everything, don't you? Happy weekend.

  6. Hey Cathy, I'd love to see what you do with your zipper flowers and tatting picots! I think about adding tatting to just about everything I see. The clever part was the design for the zipper flowers: I just embellished it. I've 'made' the flower with the shorter picot 3 times and then ripped it out 3 times. Maybe the 4th time is the charm? I'll post if I can get it to work. You go, girl, and tat too!

  11. Thank you Karen. It didn't turn out as I'd hoped (it's a bit big and bulky) but I like it anyway.

  14. Thanks so much for your lovely comment, Createology. Isn't it marvelous having the ability to see others' work, and getting a spark of an idea from what they've done? Oh, the wonders of blogland. I would never have thought of doing this without Cathy's zipper flowers post. I think artists sharing their work this way can only help the arts to grow and thrive. Hope you are having a wonderful week. Hugs

  17. Its a lovely idea and looks like a lovely flower, do you only use one side of the zip or both, and could you use an old zipper that it worn out in other words could you re-cycle one?

  18. Hi Margaret. I used one side of the zip as I had a fairly long one, but you could use both if you needed the length. It might be a challenge sewing the sides together so it didn't show on the flower, so a longer zipper might be easier.
I think you could recycle a used one as long as it was in good shape and had all its teeth. hugs
