Idea Crystallized

I found some 'crystals', 14mm faceted octogonal disks, and decided to play a little and tat around one, just to experiment.

I like the play of light, and the way crystals reflect different colours.......

The beginning....

I thought of using it as a pendant for a necklace or just as a focal for my CQing.
see how the colours change when it's on a different fabric?
The result:  sort of a snowflake

the arms look a bit wonky in the pic, but  it hasn't been blocked

this will be sewn down on fabric, perhaps on one of my CQJP blocks

I think I liked it better as a pendant.

It was fun to experiment. I think I'll try a few different patterns and see what happens.

Have you been experimenting lately?
Thanks for visiting.

  1. These are beautiful, Suz! I wish we had some real snow flakes around here, but yours are delightful.

  3. Very special to see how different fabrics influence the color of the crystal.
    Thank you for sharing.

  5. Very nice snowflakes with the crystals inside. I'll have my first tatting lesson next Monday weather permitting. Right now I'm working on some atc's & then there's the TAST Cretan stitch to try. All lots of fun :) Have a beautiful day :)

  6. Hi Marjolein. It's quite surprising what a difference another material can make. It's fun testing them out. Thanks for commenting.

  7. I love your "What If" and tatting around those beautiful crystals. Crystals are divine and to add the intricacy of tatting is just extra divine. Happy Tatting Hugs...

  10. I think facing a blank page, or an empty tatting needle used to scare me. I'd think,'what if I make a mess of the design?' Now, asking, 'what if?' lets me think about possibilities instead of failures. I try different things, now. It's all in the attitude! Thanks for leaving such a nice comment!

  11. Beautiful! Great way to incorporate the crystal.

  12. Love that snowflake! (We've had our snow and now it's wind.) Had now idea that tatting also had to be blocked. Do you then starch it? Is needle tatting different from tatting with a bobbin? (As you can see, I don't really know anything much about tatting.)

  13. What a creative mind you have to think of tatting around those crystals! I would have never thought of using them that way. The snowflakes would be so pretty hanging in a window or on a tree using only those as ornaments!

  16. Hi Judy,
Thanks for your comments. To answer your questions:
Tatting can be blocked, but often it's tightly done, and doesn't need to be blocked. Because the arms of the snowflake were a bit floppy, and tend to twist due to the stitch I used, I thought I might do blocking. Since I've decided to sew it down, I may just adjust the twist while I stitch it.
Some people like to starch their tatting, especially if it's a hanging snowflake or tree decoration. Some people prefer to use a watered down glue mixture, or even hair spray. I haven't used any of these as I'm concerned whether the procedure might damage the thread long term.
Needle tatting, so I've been told, seems to be easier to learn than shuttle, and creates a slightly looser tat. If you're interested, there are lots of how-to vids on youtube showing both.

  17. You're right Mosaic Magpie: they would look pretty on a tree or hanging in a window. I think they'd have to be stiffened to keep the arms from being wobbly, though. Or just hang the pendants instead. Thanks.

  19. Beautiful snowfalkes, dear Suz- so fantastic to hang them in a window to reflect the light...I can see Deb wrote the same, but it is so true :)

  20. It is true, Dorthe, and if I get a few more made, I just might do that, and post a pic. Thanks. Hugs

  21. Suz, your snowflakes are beautiful with or without the crystals, but adding the crystals puts them over the top gorgeous! Wonderful idea! They would be perfect on your CQ, as a pendant or as Deb and Dorthe said, as tree ornaments. How about heart shapes for valentines day ;-}

  22. Hey Connie, that's a good idea for Valentine's......I even have some heart crystals! Maybe I could encase the heart crystal inside a tatted heart...hmmm....got me thinking now!

  23. These are so sweet!! Made me remember a necklace I had when I was in my early teens which had crystals similar to the ones you have. I remember being fascinated by the play of light on the beads.

  24. I think that's the allure of crystal. I love that play of light, and I almost always wore crystal earrings when I was younger. My Mom had several pieces of Swarovski crystal, and a crystal chandelier, and the dining room would just sparkle!
