Marching Out

March is ending, and, hopefully, taking the last of the snow with it!
I'm ready for spring.
Mr. Cardinal was sitting in the magnolia tree in the front yard.

I think he's looking for spring, too.

a sure sign that spring is on the way is this little chipmunk, out looking for seeds

These goldfinch are starting to turn yellow

Still, it was really cold last week, so I brought home a wee bit of colour to cheer up the house
Mr. Milkers came to visit for a week. The snow was still pretty deep then.

look at that chin spot and those tear-drop eyes! What a cutie!

A wee bit of stitching was done on the Wedding Piece this week, with a few additions:

2 woven picot leaves, a cast-on stitch rose, and a bud.......more to add.......

On the wrapping cloth piece #12, I added a beaded center to a fancy picot flower. The base is a wrapped ring with rows of buttonhole lace

bullions bridge the design of this lace

this giant bullion is 185 wraps!
Soon it will have a few more friends......
the progress so far

I need to create more wrapping cloth pieces

It was time to actually use my Kumihimo kit.

The large braid on the left was made with the kit material using 8 strands.

The braid on the right used 8 strands of size 20 crochet cotton. I've been playing with patterns.

Tatted bunnies and cabbage edging is a seasonal tat with Easter next Monday. I used size 20 crochet cotton, so this feels quite bulky. Bunny 1 on the left has a major error with the neck join.

Next I'll tat the bunnies, with a longer chain between them, using a finer thread.

Two more gelli painted fabrics join the queue awaiting some hand stitching.

My art room has been re-organized. It's a small bedroom. (~9x11) Here's how it looks now..........( well, before I did the painting!)

north wall

east wall

This work table is a very old one with a porcelain top- once probably used for rolling out pastry, but now it's great for cleaning up spilled paint!
west wall

The center unit was fastened to the dining room wall when we bought the house, but didn't work with our furniture. Now it's a great unit for storing some of my supplies.
south wall

There's a bedroom closet to the left of the computer, and there I keep my fabrics in plastic storage tubs.

Here's how the work table looks now!
Neat and tidy didn't last long, did it? lol

Treasure hunting this past week led me to a second-hand shop where I found these blingy buttons, ( up north near the lake house)

(aren't they pretty?!)
two packages of lace,

( rolls of lace!)

4 cut-lace napkins, and 2 lace doilies.

The total came to $5.00! Wow!

I love shopping there! (too bad it's so far away)

Well, that was my week with needle, thread, paint and fabric. Hope you've had a fun and creative week.

Thanks for visiting.
Hugs from Suz

    1. Thanks Judy! I've been beavering along on other projects since I had to put the blackwork butterfly aside until my new lenses are ready. I was really pleased to find the blingy buttons. I have a sewing project to do for Jewel, and I think I may just use one or two of the diamond ones. I think she'd like that.

  2. 185 wraps? Are you sure you didn't lose count and miss two or three??? Loved seeing your Mr. Cardinal and Ms. Chippie too. Right now the huge flock of vultures are floating around over the river outside my window. Not as pretty as cardinals, but beautiful in flight.

    1. Well, anything's possible, MA. There could be 186 wraps. I was counting pretty closely so I'd know approximately how many wraps I'd need for the other long bullions...........*:| straight face Mr and Mrs Cardinal live in the cedar hedge in the back yard, but often come out to sit in the magnolia tree on sunny days. Yes, those vultures aren't very pretty close up, but birds have their own gracefulness in flight, don't they? Thanks.

    1. Animals are such beautiful creatures, aren't they? Mr, G certainly is with those blue eyes and striking colouring. Mr. Milkers is a lovely fellow, so we enjoy his visits, despite the downside: we're both allergic to cats, and I can't take antihistamines. wah!
I'm glad you liked the photos. Thanks, Fox.

  5. I hope your spring starts soon, the magnolias are flowering here, but we have had two days of gale force winds so they will have been blown off unfortunately
Your stitching is as always beautiful, your craft room looks a lovely room to work in.
Your tatted bunnies look lovely I can't wait to see what you do with them

    1. Hi Margaret. What a shame to wait so long for those blooms and have them blown away! Hopefully a few late flowers will be left to be enjoyed. I think I'd like to use the tatted bunnies to decorate a wee bag for my granddaughter, but I've been a bit distracted, and the tatting in the finer thread is not working out as well as I'd hoped: I keep missing joins, so they're floppy bunnies and a missed RW means the odd one is backwards...lol! Of course, it might help if I wasn't watching a movie while I tatted. oy! Thanks.

    1. We have a nice cool day today with a warmer one tomorrow (12C!) , but then the cold temperatures are coming back. The weatherman predicts that we'll have seasonal temperatures by mid-April. I hope he's right. Although most of the snow has melted in the back yard, the ground is too soft and soggy for me to get out to the gardens. Warmer temperatures and more sunshine should help to firm up the ground.
I wasn't sure about that yellow colour on the walls- it's more a daffodil yellow than a butter one. You know what they say....."It's better with butter"....lol and I have a softer yellow colour I wanted to use here. We'll see. We're using it in the kitchen/dining room and I like it. Thanks Starr.

  8. Wow what a post...full of fun stuff! Yes, I too hope Winter has given up for this year. I am anxious to go flower shopping. The 185 wrap bullion....an upholstery/doll needle, I am thinking. I know once you begin pulling the needle thru there is is a good amount of stroking and coaxing to get the bullion to look nice.....185 wraps must have been a work in patience!
Your flea market finds are fabulous and just perfect for you.

    1. Thanks Deb! Yes, it was a fun week. As for the long bullion, I used a tatting needle which is very much like a doll needle, but comes in various, thicker sizes with a larger eye. I have used a blunted doll needle to tat when I wanted a finer result. Actually, I've found that stroking doesn't do it for my bullions. Once the thread is wrapped, I can adjust it, whether it's on the needle or on the thread after pulling it off the needle. If I've pulled the wraps off the needle, then holding the after bullion thread end taught with my right hand, I manipulate the bullion threads with my left index finger and thumb: turning the wrapped threads clockwise loosen them (handy for anyone who tends to wrap too tightly onto the needle and has trouble pulling the wraps off) and turning them counter-clockwise tightens them again. This is great for handling a loose wrap, and one can thus wrap the bullions slightly looser, pull them off the needle, then manipulate counter-clockwise to tighten them up. It makes long bullions much easier.

  10. 185 wraps, really? I would have lost count in the middle, lol. love your wrapping cloth. You have found some really gorgeous laces, can't wait to see what you are going to do with them.Your art room looks fabulous...so organized.Could you lend/pass on to me some of your organizing skills Suz?

    1. Hi Anita. Yes, really. ;-) Some of the laces will find a home on the wrapping cloth pieces, and some may adorn a dress I'll be making for my granddaughter.
I love to organize things and will re-do it until it feels right and works well. For me, containers are key, whether they're photo boxes (like on the open shelves) or shoe boxes (see-through) that fill the large cabinet, and look tidy behind closed doors. Large containers are filled with my fabrics and are stacked in the bedroom closet. Over the closet door is a decorative 10-hook hanger where I hang long pieces of lace. I didn't show that because the door is white, as is the lace, so it doesn't show up well. Thanks

I've been having fun in my art room during the cold weather, but I'm itching to get out into the gardens. Thanks.

    1. Yes, I've been having lots of fun, Sherry. The bunny trim was tatted with the needle--I only needle tat because shuttle tatting bothers my carpal tunnel......I am enjoying the new look to my art room (and all the extra storage!) There's even an empty spot in one of the cupboards...........*;) winking I'm thinking with the Kumihimo, that I can colour-coordinate braids to some up-coming projects. Thanks.
